mostly offline following surgery on infected finger



I was in the hospital for a few days for surgery on and treatment of an infected finger - amazingly bad stuff from a simple blister... and I still have all my fingers!

>>> about 1/2 of the skin has been removed from my middle right-hand finger due to a serious infection. it started out as a simple blister, but in 2 days i was seeing a doctor; at 3 days i was at the ER with red streaks up onto to my bicep; transferred to hospital in Napa for assessment by hand surgeon; 18 hours of IV antibiotics then surgery (not sure how long since i was totally sedated). 2 more days of IV antibiotics; sent home yesterday; now just laying low…. one-handed typing!  … anyway, i see the doc tomorrow and am supposed to get hooked up with local wound care clinic. 

i am curious to see how long to grow back skin. fortunately the bottom layer of skin was able to be saved so no grafts needed (so far) - hopefully smooth sailing.

i am home now, laying low

update on medical situation and publishing schedule

June 2017: publishing the newsletter once or twice per month at this point.


previous (February 2017): i am still having some serious medical/physical difficulties. publication of this newsletter is sporadic at this point, and the new issues may be small.

    November, 2016: quick update on my medical situation: i met with my surgeon and he wants to try a course of epidural injections for my neck rather that perform surgery at this point. hopefully this will help to relieve the muscle spasms in my neck and shoulders which have literally pulled my shoulder out of place. i have been having some serious difficulty with my right arm, and have not been able or had the energy to spend nearly as much online as i used to

New Karinding – from West Java to California!



a little photo shoot with some of my instruments today – especially to acknowledge the addition of my new bamboo instruments from Billal Al Shabill (received yesterday)–  karinding, clamping,* and toleat (flute) from West Java to California! – pictured here with my hurdygurdy (made in England) and my khomus, custom made for me by Николай Бурцев of Yakutsk in Siberia. The batik in the lower half of the above photo was also in my package from West Java. – thank you Billal!

 * celempung is the large bamboo at the bottom of the above photo - a percussion instrument. see the #KhomusWeekly youtube playlist "other" for video samples.

update on my medical situation



  • a quick update on my medical situation: i met with my surgeon last week, and he wants to try a course of epidural injections for my neck rather that perform surgery at this point. hopefully this will help to relieve the muscle spasms in my neck and shoulders which have literally pulled my shoulder out of place. i have been having some serious difficulty with my right arm, and have not been able or had the energy to spend nearly as much online as i used to

update: taking the week off due to neck problem




UPDATE 17 NOVEMBER: a quick update on my medical situation: i met with my surgeon yesterday, and he wants to try a course of injections for my neck rather that perform surgery at this point. the muscle spasms in my neck and shoulders have literally pulled my shoulder out of place so that i have been having some serious difficulty with my right arm; also, we have discovered that there are 4 bad disks instead of only 3 – hopefully this therapy will work and no surgery need!  


UPDATE – 18 AUGUST: i had hoped to restart, but find that i need to just postpone all publications for awhile.

NOTE – 1st AUGUST: the paper usually updates each Monday, but i am hellish time with my injured neck, so i am not updating the paper this week
UPDATE – 8 AUGUST: the situation remains the same!UPDATE – 11 AUGUST: it shifted, and is getting better. – a new edition is published, but that has only a few videos and photos... i will try to update over the next few days?
